Key Features

The program includes extensive customization options and automated features. The program includes thousands of actions as well as macro features and customizable toolbars with Lua/EEL/Python scripting options and OSC/MIDI learn functionality for complete control.

The new 7.42 version (“Grand theft auto-complete”) enhances MIDI functionality while improving workflow and reliability across Crossfade editor and scrub features as well as Windows MIDI hardware I/O:

The MIDI timebase and overdub system received fixes which address loop iterations and pencil drawing functions as well as paste snapping behavior and re-conform behavior when users change item timebases.
The Crossfade editor receives new precise preview functions and roll-time adjustment features.
A one-shot jog preference has been added to the scrub function along with toggleable actions.
The Phase aligner now features a max adjustment limit of 0 ms for achieving invert-only alignment.

A Real-World Workflow (vocals + guitars, tight edits)

Recording vocals and double-track guitars requires the comp of takes before fixing timing and phase issues and then exporting a clean final mix.

Project setup. The audio device will receive ASIO support through Preferences ▸ Audio ▸ Device. Create folders: 01 Drums, 02 Bass, 03 Guitars, 04 Vox.
Recording lanes & comping. Users must enable track arms before starting loop record to collect recorded tracks. In Comping mode, swipe best segments; use auto-crossfades between items.
Crossfades at speed. Users can use the Crossfade editor to test Left/Right/Both options during playback without interruption while making pre-post roll adjustments before finalizing their selections.
Phase tidy-up. You should place the Phase aligner on the guitar bus to test inversion-only alignment by setting maximum adjustment to 0 ms. The user should preserve the low end if it becomes focused but allow a few milliseconds for better results.
MIDI polish (if using keys). Users should verify that pasted looped parts align through PPQN instead of source start positioning and the 7.42 fixes prevent notes from getting lost during loop overdubbing.
Render reliably. Users should test short stems first when rendering MP3 files at project sample rate because 7.42 fixes initial blanks and dropped samples but users should verify the results.
Export. Use Region Render Matrix for vocal/guitar stems + master; embed basic metadata and loudness stats report.

OS: Windows 10/11 (64-bit recommended). REAPER officially supports XP→11, but modern setups should target 10/11.
CPU/RAM (practical guidance): any modern Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 with 8–16 GB RAM handles medium sessions; scale up for heavy VI/FX chains and large sample libraries.
Storage: SSD recommended for projects and sample libraries; installer itself is ~15 MB (Windows x64).
Audio drivers: ASIO (preferred) or WASAPI on Windows.
